The V8 Supercars Series was formed in 1993 as a replacement of the Australian Touring Car Championship which was based on the Group A formula as described by the FIA. It modified this formula to include 3 categories.
- Class A: Australian produced 5 litre engined cars.
- Class B: 2 litre engined cars complying to the FIA Class II Touring Car formula and, for the 1993 season, cars homologated under the 1992 CAMS Group 3A Touring Car formula
The cars must be produced in Australia and have a 5 litre homologated engine. The standard minimum weight is 1355kg.
